Field Engineering, Walkout & MDU Survey

Field services is the first stage of the Signal Chain and the one everything downstream depends on. A design is only as good as the plant record it was drawn against — and plant records drift. BOGO walks the plant and captures what is actually there.

Why plant records stop matching the plant

Nobody sets out to keep a bad record. Records drift because networks are maintained continuously and documented periodically, and the gap between those two cadences compounds over years.

A technician swaps an amplifier on a Tuesday night to clear an outage. A tap gets changed to fix one subscriber's levels. A developer re-routes strand around a new subdivision and the operator's map is updated eventually, or partially, or not at all. A pedestal gets paved over during a road project. Each of these is reasonable in isolation; collectively they are why a design drawn from records alone generates change orders during construction.

The cost is asymmetric. Verifying the plant is a known, budgetable expense. Discovering the plant is wrong during construction means idle crews, re-issued drawings, and in the worst cases a permitting cycle that has to start over. That asymmetry is why the Signal Chain puts FIELD before DESIGN rather than treating verification as optional.

Physical walkout and network inventory

A walkout is exactly what it sounds like: a technician physically traverses the plant and records what is on it. Done properly it produces a device-level inventory — actives, passives, taps, power supplies, enclosures, and the strand or conduit connecting them — located and attributed.

The value is in the attribution, not just the presence. Knowing there is an amplifier at a location is worth something. Knowing its make, model, configuration and whether it supports the spectrum plan the operator is about to deploy is what lets a modernization program be sized accurately instead of estimated.

BOGO captures to the operator's data standard, so the results are usable directly in the operator's systems rather than requiring translation. Where no standard exists, we agree one before mobilizing — a walkout that produces data nobody can ingest has spent the field cost without buying the benefit.

Asset verification against the record

Verification is walkout with a comparison attached. Rather than building an inventory from nothing, the field data is reconciled against the operator's existing record and the differences are reported as exceptions.

This is usually the right approach when the record is broadly trustworthy but known to have gaps — it is faster than a full inventory and it produces something more actionable: a specific list of what is wrong and where. Operators use that list to correct the system of record, and design uses it to know which areas carry uncertainty.

Exception reporting also has a second use. A market with a high exception rate is telling you something about its maintenance history, and that is worth knowing before committing a capital program to it.

Pole and attachment data collection

Pole data is a specialized subset of field work because it feeds a regulated process rather than an internal record. What is on the structure, at what height, in what order, and with what clearances determines whether a new attachment is possible and what make-ready is required.

That analysis is governed by the National Electrical Safety Code and by the pole owner's construction standards, and the resulting applications run under the federal pole attachment framework at 47 CFR Part 1, Subpart J. Data collected without those requirements in mind frequently has to be re-collected, which is a second mobilization nobody budgeted.

MDU surveys

Multiple dwelling units are their own discipline. The plant outside the building is only half the problem; inside there are riser paths, existing wiring of unknown age and ownership, a demarcation point that may or may not be where the records say, and a property owner whose access requirements shape the schedule.

An MDU survey establishes what is physically present and what serving the building will actually require: riser availability and condition, existing distribution, equipment space and power, and the practical constraints of working in an occupied building.

The output feeds the serving design and, importantly, the construction estimate. MDUs are a common place for per-unit cost assumptions to break down, because building access, pathway conditions, internal distribution, and construction requirements can vary substantially from site to site — a building that looks identical to the one next door can have a completely different internal situation.

Field engineering and what the data is for

Field engineering is the layer above collection: making engineering judgments on site rather than deferring every question to the office. Whether a proposed route is viable, whether a structure can practically be worked, what a specific condition means for the design — these are answered faster and better by an engineer standing in front of the plant.

Everything captured in the field feeds directly into the next stages:

  • HFC design — device inventory, tap values and cascade arrangement
  • Fiber design — route viability, structure conditions, conduit occupancy
  • Make-ready — pole and attachment data, clearance analysis
  • Segmentation — the verified topology a boundary decision has to be defensible against
  • Closeout — the baseline the as-built is reconciled against

Because BOGO carries all of those stages, field data is collected by people who know exactly what it will be used for. That is a quieter advantage than it sounds: it is the difference between a dataset that answers the design's questions and one that merely describes the plant.

What is the difference between a walkout and asset verification?

A walkout builds a device-level inventory from nothing. Verification reconciles field observation against your existing record and reports the differences as exceptions. Verification is faster and more actionable when your record is broadly trustworthy but known to have gaps; a full walkout is right when it isn't.

What data standard do you collect to?

Yours. If a standard exists we collect to it so the results are directly ingestible. If one doesn't, we agree it before mobilizing — a walkout that produces data nobody can load has spent the field cost without buying the benefit.

Do we really need a walkout if we have plant records?

It depends on how much you are about to spend against them. Records drift through routine maintenance — swapped actives, changed taps, re-routed strand, buried pedestals. Verification is a budgetable cost; discovering the record was wrong during construction means idle crews, re-issued drawings, and sometimes a permitting cycle that restarts.

Can you collect pole data for a make-ready submission?

Yes, and we collect it knowing what the make-ready package needs because we produce that package too. Pole data collected without the attachment process in mind frequently has to be re-collected — a second mobilization nobody budgeted for.

What does an MDU survey include?

Do you do field work in markets where you aren't doing the design?

Yes — field services can be engaged on their own. That said, most of the value compounds when the same team carries the data into design, permitting and closeout, because the data gets collected by people who know exactly what it will be asked to answer.
